Dump cakes are one of my favorite desserts. The name might not be so appealing, but the unique, delicious flavor always is! They’re so named because the ingredients are literally “dumped” into the baking dish. You don’t have to worry about mixing.

The texture always comes out perfect: warm and bubbly fruit filling and a golden, topping.

It’s a totally decadent dessert that seems so much more complicated than it is. (This blueberry cobbler and this blackberry cobbler are both the same way – super easy but sure to impress.)

Cherry Dump Cake Ingredients

You will need:

  • 2 cans (21oz) cherry pie filling
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 1 small pkg (2.25 oz) sliced almonds

I’ve heard some people like to add a little crushed pineapple as well, but I haven’t tried that way yet. If you do, let me know how it turns out!

How to Make Cherry Dump Cake

As I said, this homemade recipe is totally effortless to bake. I make this in a 9×13 dish. You could halve the recipe and make in an 8×8 dish as well if you’d rather.

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray your baking dish with cooking spray.

STEP TWO: In a medium bowl mix both cans of cherry pie filling together with the vanilla and pour into the 9×13 baking dish. Use a spatula to make sure the entire dish is covered in an even layer.

STEP THREE: Next, pour the yellow cake mix evenly over the top of the cherries.

STEP FOUR: Pour the melted butter evenly over the top of the yellow cake mix. Do not stir!!

STEP FIVE: Spread the sliced almonds evenly over the top.

STEP SIX: Bake 50 minutes, until the top is golden brown.

STORING THIS recipe

If you happen to have leftovers — which doesn’t always happen in my house — you can store in a sealed container in the fridge for a couple of days.

You might even find you like the texture of cold dump cake. I have friends who love it served cold even more than warm.

What to Serve this with

I prefer to serve this fresh and hot from the oven, with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. I think that’s the absolute best! You could also serve with fresh whipped cream if you would prefer.

I love topping my cherry dump cake with almonds but you could also top with coconut. I have a friend who also tops with a little shaved chocolate as well. Yummy!

I absolutely love cherry desserts. Whether it’s fresh cherries or ready to go cherry pie filling, I love them. This cherry dump cake recipe is the perfect easy dessert to enjoy with family and friends any time of year. No matter how you serve this crowd-pleasing favorite, the layers of delicious flavors are irresistible.
