How to Use Mason Jars for Proper Storage

A clean, organized space can make a world of a difference when it comes to creativity, productivity, and simply how you feel in a space. We were looking for some creative ways to organize our DIY space and found some amazing, functional, and beautiful mason jar organizing tutorials. We’ve highlighted a few of our favorites in this post, just for you:

1. Mason Jar Wall Organizers

Mason jar wall organizers are a perfect project to reuse your mason jars for storage and organization.

What You’ll Need:


8, 12, or 16oz. Mason jars

Hose clamps

Wood (about 2 ft by 7 in.)
Wood stain
Picture hanging kit

Drill & screws



Do It Yourself:


Start by staining your wood. (Depending on how you want your finished piece to look, you can skip this step.)
Let it completely dry.
Before you drill your holes, mark where you want them to be placed. Then, using a drill bit, pre-drill a small hole in both the hose clamp as well as the wood. Then line up the two holes and drill the hose clamp into the wood so it is attached. (Repeat with the rest of the hose clamps.)
Fasten your jars inside the hose clamps.
Use picture hangers on the back of the wood to hand your new mason jar organizer on your wall.
Load it up with all your items and enjoy!

2. Use A Mason Jar to Organize Your Buttons

Using a mason jar to organize your buttons is such a creative way to organize your buttons! Any DIY-er would love this.

What You’ll Need:


8, 12, or 16oz. Mason jars
Craft Magnets
Glue gun and hot glue


Do It Yourself:


Take one button and hot glue it to a magnet.
Place the button/magnet on the lid of your mason jar.
Fill your jar with the rest of the buttons and screw the lid back on.
Repeat with the other buttons and jars. This is such a great idea for storage and can be applied so many different craft items – even screws and nails!

3. Mason Jar Pincushion

This pincushion and sewing kit is a great way to keep your simple sewing supplies organized! (Also makes for a great gift!)

What You’ll Need:


8, 12, or 16oz. Mason jars
Fiberfill
Glue gun and hot glue
Printed fabric

Scrapbook paper (best if it coordinates with your printed fabric)
Pencil


Do It Yourself:


Flip your scrapbook paper over so the printed side is down. Trace a circle onto the paper using the mason jar lid. You’ll be putting these on the bottom of the lid to create the finished look. Cut out a 4″x4″ piece of fabric.
Now you are ready to assemble the lid. Set the rim of the lid on a flat surface with the top facing down. Put a piece of fabric on top of the rim with the pattern side facing down.
Put a small fistful of fiberfill above the fabric.
Place the lid of the jar above the fiberfill.
Thrust the lid, fiberfill, and fabric slightly through the rim of the jar.
Once the lid is pretty secure inside the rim, cut any excess fabric and using hot glue gun make the fabric lay flat.
Use the scrapbook paper to cover the inside of the lid. Hot glue it in place.

4. Mason Jar Storage Shelf



Running out of storage space? This mason jar storage shelf will show you how to extend the storage space of any shelf!

What You’ll Need:


A shelf with a flat bottom
Mason jars with lids (1/2 pint and pint jars)
Screws
Drill

Chalkboard labels (optional)


Do It Yourself:


Start by hanging your shelf on the wall. It’s easier to get this set up before you have the lids and jars attached. Then, take it down and flip it over so the bottom is facing up.
Mark where all the holes will be drilled, then drill the lids to the shelf.
Hang your shelf up, then start screwing your jars into the lids.
This is optional, but you can use chalkboard labels to keep track of what is in each jar.

5. Mason Jar Desk Organizer



Learn how to organize your desk using mason jars. It’s frugal and absolutely effective!

What You’ll Need:


8, 12, or 16oz. Mason jars
Glue gun and hot glue


Do It Yourself:


You’ll be amazed at how simple and quick this desk organizer comes together! Just use your hot glue gun to glue the jars together. Simple as that!

6. Mason Jar Yarn And String Dispenser

This mason jar yarn and string dispenser is a simple way to keep your yarn from getting tangled (and falling on the floor)!

What You’ll Need:


8 or 12 oz mason jars
Nail
Hammer


Do It Yourself:


Punch a hole in the metal lid of the jar using a nail and hammer.
Place yarn in a jar and thread it through the hole.
Repeat until all balls of yarn are nicely stored.
