Pocket Chick & Hen · Free Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Pocket Chick & Hen · Free Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

I recently designed this adorable Mom & Baby set!  I can't wait to show you how to crochet your very own chicken family too.

The Pocket Hen, Chick, & Nest pattern shows you how to crochet a miniature Mother and Baby chicken, as well as their nest bed.  The free version of this pattern is available as a video tutorial, and will show you how to crochet the hen and chick!

    About the Pattern

    • Easy and beginner-friendly
    • Works up quickly
    • Includes a step-by-step video tutorial
    • No sewing needed
    • Stashbuster project; great for using up leftover yarn scraps
    • Small and cute

I just adore how this sweet baby chick turned out. Quite proud of the smooth slope in his back!

The momma bird uses the same body base and beak as the chick, but has the following additional parts: her red crown, green tail, and wings.  She can actually pass as a rooster too!

Instructions for crocheting a nest is available in the written PDF pattern.  It makes for a lovely home for your baby chick and mama hen!

    • Pretend play toys for children
    • Nursery decor for baby rooms (can be made into a nursery mobile for a barn or farm-themed room)
    • Party favors for kids birthdays
    • Valentine's Day or Easter presents gifts for an entire class of students
    • Non-edible or non-candy Easter Egg stuffers
    • Unisex, gender neutral present
    • Keychain charm
    • Selling at spring/summer craft fairs or markets
    • Therapy tool / sensory fidget toy / stress ball (for people with anxiety, ADHD, or autism)

You can use any yarn fiber, from cotton to chenille velvet, to create different textures…or any weight to create different sizes!  This bird doll looks great in all different yarn colors, including solids, ombre, self-striping, and variegated yarn. Customization is easy by adding crocheted appliques, bows, beads, buttons, facial features, and more.

To make your chickens exactly like mine, try going with some chunky chenille velvet yarn and a large (5mm) hook. I used Hobbii's Baby Snuggle Yarn and Honey Bunny Yarn. They're very similar in weight and feel, and are perfect for a soft and squishy amigurumi. For more information about the Baby Snuggle Yarn, feel free to check out my Baby Snuggle Yarn Review!

You can also use thinner yarn, such as medium worsted weight or DK yarn, and pair it with a smaller hook. This will give you a tinier, keychain-sized amigurumi!
