These snow globes were so fun to make… we couldn’t stop at one!
I didn’t realise how easy it was to make a snow globe. There are a few tricks you need to know to ensure it doesn’t leak and the glitter disperses well when shaken.
We could have used figurines from our toy stash… but we wanted to use something cute and current.
It was difficult to find the figurines we were after. We opted to remove the icons on the re-usable plastic straws from Kmart.
As you can see they look so cool and my girls have loved shaking them to see the glitter fall over their chosen figure.
It’s important to note that on the Kmart website it does say not to immerse these figures in the drink – this is a safety issue to prevent choking. Immersing them in the snow globe has not dis-coloured or broken down the figures.
Materials
- Plastic or Glass Jars (plastic jars are great for little kids – prevents breakages!)
- Hot Glue Gun
- Glitter
- Water
- Glycerine
- Figures
- Stanley Knift
- Plumbers Tape (not shown)
Instructions
First, remove the motif icons from the straws. Use a knife to remove the straw attachment. You will want to have two of the same straw so you can glue each icon together so it has two sides.
Use the hot glue gun to glue the figurine on the inside of the lid.
Fill the jar with water, not quite to the top as you don’t want to overfill when the lid is placed on.
Add 1 teaspoon of glycerine. You can also use baby oil. This is important to give viscosity to the water so the glitter will float down when shaken. I got the glycerine from Priceline.
Sprinkle in your glitter. I got some fabulous glitter packs from Kmart. It looks awesome when you mix two different types of glitter.
Use plumbers tape around the jar so when the lid is screwed on, it will create a water tight seal.
Screw the lid on and you’ve now got a really cute snow globe.
